ABOUT US

The North Shore Warriors Hockey Academy was founded in 2016 and was formerly named the West Vancouver Warriors Hockey Academy. This high-performance hockey development program remains the only Hockey Canada Accredited School on Vancouver’s North Shore and joined the Canadian Sport School Hockey League in 2016. Since that time, the Academy has expanded to six teams playing in U15, U15 Prep, U16 Prep, U17 Prep, U18 Prep and Female U18 Prep divisions. As a National leader in education-based hockey, the CSSHL has established itself as the league of choice for youth hockey development.

The Warriors have won two CSSHL Championship titles (2018, 2019) and is proud of their many alumni playing in the WHL, BCHL, NCAA, and professional ranks. NHL draft picks Layton Ahac (Las Vegas, 3rd round, 2019) and Fraser Minten (Toronto, 2nd round, 2022) are recent Warriors alumni (Ahac – 2016-17; Minten – 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20).

In 2022, the Academy rebranded and became the North Shore Warriors Hockey Academy to better reflect the fantastic region in which we call home.

EDUCATION

The education our students receive is a cornerstone to our Academy. With our Hockey Canada Accredited School status, students attend the same high school with a customizable education schedule to provide the best development experience possible. As such, students receive full academic credit for their participation in Warriors programming. We expect students to attend all classes, participate in a manner reflective of program values, and be as committed to education as they are to hockey.

ATHLETICS

The North Shore Hockey Academy is a fully approved BC Hockey and Hockey Canada Accredited School program.  Each team plays between 45 – 50 games per season.  Hockey training and development  takes place throughout the school year (September – June), with additional skill development available April through June.  Our professional coaches and staff take great responsibility for the development of all student athletes on and off the ice.  We also strongly encourage our students to be involved in additional activities, sports, and interests outside of hockey.

Leadership & Personal Development

Our leadership culture is apparent in all aspects of our academy and development. Our goal is to have our young athletes grow into contributing leaders of their classroom, peer group, and community. This foundation is built by choosing a positive attitude, having respect for yourself, your peers, and your environment, and committing to creating a culture of improvement, accountability, and fun. Students can expect to be involved in regular goal setting, season progress plans, personal development initiatives, and areas of responsibility that span beyond the hockey rink.

NORTH SHORE WINTER CLUB - OUR HOME ARENA

ON-ICE TRAINING

On ice training, and off ice training will take place predominantly within the athletic facilities of North Shore Winter Club (NSWC).

North Shore Winter Club has over 60 years of hockey history and was established on Vancouver’s North Shore in 1958. In 2019, NSWC completed significant club upgrades and improvements, which included updates to their ice rink and training facilities. NSWC offers 4 ice sheets for on-ice training, a state-of-the-art fitness center, three off-ice high performance training centers, an off-ice hockey specific dryland training area, and is conveniently situated on the North Shore of Vancouver with ideal access to Highway 1 and main transportation corridors.

The hockey program at North Shore Winter Club has a strong and storied history, and has produced a number of notable alumni players, coaches, and officials throughout the BCHL, WHL, NCAA, AHL, NHL, and International hockey leagues.

OFF-ICE TRAINING

The North Shore Warriors off-ice training program is developed and designed by professionals at North Shore Winter Club’s High Performance Centre. These professionals have, and continue to work with a stable of professional athletes across multiple sports, including the National Hockey League.  NSWC also staff a number of professional therapists who are available and on site daily for preventative and reactionary injury care.

Each week students participate in strength and conditioning sessions, and alternative training sessions such as Yoga, Pilates, and Plyometrics.  Taking advantage of the local North Shore landscape, athletes will also train using outdoor resources such as the Grouse Grind,  Seawall and mountain trails to add diversity to their routine. Additionally, our student athletes receive a customized training schedule and program from our educational partner, North Shore Academy.

Additional time off-ice training commitments are allocated to video review, mental mindset, and goal setting sessions.

LEADERSHIP

Leadership & Personal Development

A key value metric of our program is exposing student athletes to elements of life discovery, leadership, accountability, and personal growth. This philosophy continues to be a primary driver at the North Shore Warriors Hockey Academy. We strongly believe well-rounded individuals find a greater sense of pride and self-confidence, allowing them to reach their true potential in sport and in life.

Our staff share the fundamental belief that we can help our students become successful in all aspects in their lives.   Yes, we are competitive; and yes, we love to win.  We also love to build leaders, regardless of aspiration – professional athlete, entrepreneur, tradesperson, or artist. Our leadership pyramid is a foundation and cornerstone of responsibility for our students that will aide in their success on and off the ice.

Part of our commitment to personal discovery and growth is the integration of activities and external resources that expand horizons for our students. This includes community volunteering, goal setting, personal management, family connectivity, and financial concepts.  Our students will also be exposed to a number of guest speakers from diverse backgrounds to assist in broadening their life outlook.
